A Photo Tour – Hornby Island & Denman, British Columbia

Volcanic Rock, Draft Dodgers and Ley Lines O My!

Our day trip to the Islands of Denman and Hornby turned out to be one of the main highlights of our time on Vancouver Island.   The combination of beautiful scenery, down to earth locals, and a colourful history made this day hike a great one!

Now apparently Hornby Island was a major destination for “Draft Dodgers” during the Vietnam war, many of whom, still reside on the Island.  The reason being is that this little island of only 950 residents, requires two ferry crossings and is miles away from any major city.  When people were sent looking for them, locals working the ferry lines would give them the heads up and they would hide in the woods.

Another cool thing about Hornby Island, is that the apparent “Ley Lines” intersect on this tiny island.  Now apparently, “Ley Lines”, coined by writer John Mitchell, are mystical and spiritual alignments of landforms based on the teachings of Feng Shui.  Many claim that when they come to the island, they feel recharged and have an overall better sense of being.

Finally, we had the pleasure of hiking on ancient volcanic rock which had the appearance of honeycomb after years of being worn away by the ocean.  Seeing these rocks in person was a thrill and something that I recommend everyone see if they have the opportunity.
